BOY BOOKS

I have found it is much harder to find books Spencer likes.  He is a non-fiction kind of guy.  Annie inhales books.  She did from the beginning.  Spencer has always required "certain" books and so I bring home piles from the library and see what he likes.  We were in Oregon at Powell's bookstore and I got him all of these and he has been coming home each day, passing the legos and reading. Wanted to pass on in the event it is helpful.

He is also reading Unwanted but not devouring them like he has these other ones.  That Powell's Books is great in Portland.  I could just tell by the way they had things set out what Spencer would get in to and I was right 100% with each book.

Falling Into Heaven By Stephen Craig

Falling Into Heaven is a book about a boy named Ike who lives with his dad. When he finds out that his dad has invented a suit that allows people to explore the skies he wants to try it out. When Ike is able to try out the suit he finds that he is on top of the world. But there are also I questions that he has; Why has his dad not shared it with the world? Why is he reluctant to share everything with him? Why is his dad so nervous about letting Ike use it when he sees it is perfectly safe? I like this book because it makes me think about what we can do as humans and what we can't do but it also is very mysterious and it grabs your attention quickly.

Knight's Tales Series by Annie age 10

The Adventures of Sir Lancelot the Great

The Knights Tales Series by Gerald Morris is a super hilarious series about the Knights of Camelot. Currently, there is 4 books but, I think there will be more. Gerald Morris is also the author of the Squire's Tales Series which I have not read yet but, I hope to read soon. Now I'll tell you about the 4 books in the Knight's Tales.

The Adventures of Sir Lancelot the Great
This book is about Sir Lancelot, King Arthur's best knight. Sir Lancelot realizes that the problem with being the greatest knight in England is that everyone always wants to fight you. In this book Sir Lancelot goes on crazy adventures such as: going through a siege in a tree, fighting a tournament on a pillow, defending the Queen in armor made out of twigs and many more!

The Adventures of Sir Givret the Short
Just because Sir Givret is really short it doesn't mean that he isn't smart. In fact, Sir Givret is very brilliant. Sir Givret is usually using his brilliance to stop Sir Eric the brave (and the not so smart) from doing really stupid things. This book is my favorite of this series.

The Adventures of Sir Gawain the True
At first Sir Gawain the Undefeated like many of the other knights didn't listen to King Arthur's long lectures about manners. But with some time and practice Sir Gawain becomes the most well mannered knight at the round table and becomes known as Sir Gawain the True. Read to find out how!

The Adventures of Sir Balin the Ill-fated
Sir Balin believes he has loads of bad luck because of the prophetess of some mountain's prophecy. He is destined to bring down 2 kingdoms in one day, strike the dolorous stroke, and to kill the knight he loves most in the world. It turns out it does happen that way but not how it seems. Read it for yourself.

I loved these books and I hope you will to.

The Sisters Grimm: The Council of Mirrors by Michael Buckley (reviewed by Bud, age 7)

The Sisters Grimm # 9: The Council of Mirrors by Michael Buckley is an astounding book. The Grimms (Sabrina, Daphne, Jacob, Henry, Veronica, and Granny Relda.) live in a town  called Ferryport Landing. Ferryport Landing is a very unusual place. It is full of Everafters (Everafters are fairy tale characters). While the Grimms (except Granny Relda whose body has been hijacked by the mirror in Snow White) fight the Scarlet Hand (the Scarlet Hand is group of Everafters who think they should take over the world) they notice it is not as easy as they thought. Inside the Master's mirror there is a group of magic mirrors. They say that Sabrina and Daphne will save the world. It's not as easy as they thought even with a coven and an army. This book is as good as the other books in the series. What do think will happen next?

Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater (reviewed by Bud, age 7)

Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater is amazing! Mr. Popper is a housepainter. But now it's autumn and Mr. Popper gets to stay home. While he's reading a book about Antarctic penguins he turns the radio to listen to the weather and a voice says, "Mr. Popper". "Is that you, the famous Admiril Drake?" Mr. Popper asked. And indeed it was. "I will have a surprise coming in the mail next week."  And with that he was gone. To find out more read Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater.

Stickman Odyssey Series by Annie age 10

The Stickman Odyssey is a hilarious series of graphic novels. The first one is about how misfit, unlucky, Prince Zozimos raised by his uncle Nestor, is trying to find his homeland Sticatha to reclaim the thrown and take revenge on the "Evil Witch Queen" who killed his father and turned his sisters into crows ( Nestor made the crow part up.) On his way he finds lifelong companions: Praxis and Atrukos. Zozimos also meets Alexa

The second book is about how Zozimos finds Sticatha. The Queen turns out to be a nice person and she says if Zozimos and his crew the Stickonauts finds the magic feather and brings it to her, Zozimos will become king. Then after the successful quest, Nestor arrives with a army of centaurs and shoots the queen. What will Zozimos, now king do? Read to find out. This series is humorous and exciting. The Willoughbys, by Lois Lowry

There are these parents who have four kids, but they are very selfish parents and they don't really like them. And the kids don't really like their parents. The oldest, Tim, makes all the decisions for the other three kids. There are two twins, named Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and a daughter named Jane. The kids want to become orphans like the children in old fashioned stories. Fortunately, the parents decide that they want to go on a long, dangerous trip without their kids. They hire a nanny to stay with the kids, who find a millionaire benefactor to take care of them, just like in old fashioned stories. I like it because it is really humorous and it's kind of an adventure story. In the end they find a happy family. [Note from the mother: this summary sounds like it's a bit harsh -- it's not. It's very lighthearted, extremely clever, and fun to read. I also recommend the audiobook read by Artie Johnson.]

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi
A girl named Charlotte goes on a ship voyage alone, and the crew is very rough and are not "proper." When a crew member dies from an accident during a storm, Charlotte gets charged with murder and convicted. The rest of the story tells how she gets out of this predicament and comes out on top. There are a lot of plot twists so you can never tell what will happen next. It's a really fun story and once I started reading it, I could not put it down.

Who Could That Be at This Hour? By Lemony Snicket

This book is about a kid named Lemony Snicket (who is also the author), who is looking for a job to apprentice. He ends up with a detective who is on a case looking for a stolen item. On his journey to track down the thief, he meets a lot of strange people. Read the book to find out what happens next. What I like about this book is that the thief isn't who you expect and it throws you for a loop. I'm recommending this book to you because it is funny and suspenseful.
